Veneers Q&A

What are dental veneers?

Dental veneers are incredibly thin porcelain shells that sit directly on top of your natural teeth. When you admire the seemingly perfect smile of a celebrity or other public figure, you are often admiring a great set of veneers.

Veneers are a popular option because they can address multiple cosmetic issues with the same treatment. Some of the areas where dental veneers can create transformations include:

  • Discoloration
  • Abnormally small teeth
  • Minor misalignment
  • Gapped teeth
  • Irregularities in shape
  • Chips or fractures

Veneers can be applied to just one tooth, but the more common approach is to have veneers placed on all of the teeth visible when you smile. During your initial visit, Dr. Beckford discusses whether veneers are the best option for your needs.

Are dental veneers permanent?

The process of getting dental veneers requires Dr. Beckford to remove a very small portion of your tooth enamel to make room for the veneers. This means that veneers are technically permanent, although they will eventually need to be replaced.

Dental veneers can last 15 years or more with proper care. When they wear out, however, you will need to have a new set of veneers placed to protect the treated teeth from damage.

What are Lumineers®?

Lumineers are a dental veneers system that does not require any alteration of your natural tooth tissue. They can deliver the same effects as traditional veneers, and they can last more than 20 years.

Once they wear down, you can decide if you’d like to have new Lumineers placed or go a different route. Your natural teeth will be the same as when you had your first set of Lumineers placed.

How should I care for my dental veneers?

Your dental veneers are made of durable materials and are securely cemented into place. You can protect them from excess wear and extend their lifespan with some simple precautions.

Avoid biting down on hard foods or objects. Don’t use your teeth to pry things open or hold items, even briefly. If you grind your teeth at night, come in for a custom-fitted night guard to protect against wear.
