Digital X-Rays Q&A

What are digital X-rays?

X-ray technology has long been a powerful tool in modern dentistry. Prior to the availability of this form of imaging, dentists had to rely only on what they could see with their own eyes when shaping patient care. The extent of decay or any issues going on inside the teeth were a mystery.

Once X-rays became widely available, dentists were able to understand how decay, trauma, or other conditions affect the interior tissues of each tooth. This allowed treatment plans to be shaped according to the exact needs of each patient, without removing healthy tissue or compromising the structural integrity of the teeth.

Though traditional X-rays still play a significant role in dental care, digital X-rays provide a next-level experience. Digital radiography enables clear imaging of your teeth, gums, and bone tissue.

How do digital X-rays work?

Digital radiography uses several approaches, and the right option depends on your specific imaging needs. The direct method uses a special electronic sensor positioned inside your mouth to gather images.

The indirect method relies on an X-ray film scanner to scan traditional X-ray films and convert them into digital files. There is also a semi-indirect method that uses both a sensor and scanner to create digital images.

Digital X-rays can be taken from inside or outside of the mouth. Extraoral, or external, X-rays don’t provide the same level of detail as intraoral, or internal scans, but they do have certain uses.

Why choose digital X-rays for dental care?

Dr. Beckford chose to incorporate digital X-ray technology into her practice for a number of reasons. Some of the benefits include:

  • Ability to identify even the smallest areas of decay with minimal radiation
  • Greener approach that does not require chemicals to process film or special disposal steps
  • Ability to send your imaging to other specialists as needed
  • Ability to store many large files on space-saving drives
  • Clearer imaging allows patients to better understand their needs and treatment plans
  • Easier and faster communication with insurance providers, which means less waiting for coverage approval
